Home Build Journey: Foundation

Home Build Journey: Foundation

So it has been a while since I have posted anything for a couple reasons….COVID is just a real pain in the ass. There I said it, I feel like I have lost a little bit of my creativity because I literally do the same thing every damn day. So it is time to flip the switch because there is A LOT to be thankful for. So here I am writing about our home build journey.

WE ARE BUILDING A HOUSE! If you live in our area you can drive by and see this post is pretty late in the game. I thought it was easier to break things up then writing a novel to include all that has happened up to this point. So I am taking it to the beginning and will do some follow up posts to break things down in our home build journey.

Why Build?

We sold our first “home” almost a year ago. It was the first house we had ever purchased and it is the house that we brought all three of our babies home to. But we finally outgrew it in many ways. It was a great house in a FANTASTIC location. The space and the maintenance was not something that was going to work long term for our family.

Building a home was something we always wanted to do and we finally were able to pull the trigger on that dream. We looked at floor plans/layouts for years and I know that sounds like an exaggeration but IT IS NOT. We scoured every plan on all the websites trying to find that perfect fit, which we came close, but we never found “the one”. It seemed that the living rooms were too small and the bedrooms were way to big. I know you can make changes to those plans but we got more and more precise about what we wanted as the years went by so we went down the custom design route.

Now don’t think that this was any easier to find “the one”. It didn’t happen right away for us but we found it and we cannot wait to be living in it FOREVER! And I mean it when I say forever! For the time, effort, AND MONEY I am never moving out of this house when it is done.

Foundation

On to the “fun stuff” I am going to start out by showing you the foundation phase. It might be boring to some but if you have never built a home you might find the process interesting.

It is a bit hard to see here but this was really the first step in “seeing the space”. We used some trusty flags to mark each corner of the house and get a good feel for things regarding the orientation of the house. There is a pond at the back of the property and we wanted the views to be in the right place.

Next it was time to dig the basement and boy was it wet.

After they dug the basement out and poured the footings then it was time to add some basement walls!

Then finally a basement floor was poured! We will have a walkout basement. The right of this picture will be 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. In the middle is our utility/safe room and play area. Finally to the left is a potential 3rd bedroom/bathroom but will be used as a workout area for now.

I think that is enough to take in for one post and enough for me to write about. As you divulge this riveting post feel free to drop any questions/comments you have below! I will get another post up next week to show the framing stage!
