Yarn Craft Activity

Yarn Craft Activity

Well I think we all know why I am posting this simple yarn craft activity don’t we??? It feels like day 675 of quarantine but who knows what day it really is. So, I am trying to find things for my kids to do every day. Here is what our day is looking like on a very loose schedule:

Breakfast
Kids Play/Screen Time* (I workout and do my “things”)
Day of the week cleaning
Lunch -12pm
Afternoon Lessons (Math, Art, etc)
Kids Play/Screen Time
Dinner – 6:30pm
Daily Pick Up
Family Time
Bed Time – 8:30pm
*Screen time can be electronic device, cartoon, or a movie. We either do it in the afternoon or morning. Kids play is active play with no screens.

We are adjusting what we do by day. This week we have found that doing our day of the week cleaning in the morning while they have the most energy works best because they like to slow down a bit in the afternoon.

So since I have plenty of yarn laying around AND Amazon boxes I decided to do this craft with them yesterday afternoon. My 8 year old needed little to no help and my 6 year old needed a little help, and I did my 3 year olds for her. I let her cut tape and cut yarn but that was about it.

So when you are out and about grabbing your “essentials” for the week stop by Wal-Mart or order online at JoAnn’s, Michaels for pick up and you will be ready to get crafting. Any yarn will do and you can likely find coupons for JoAnn’s and Michaels to save some money.

Materials:

  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Cardboard
  • Marker
  • Hot glue gun (optional) or Elmer’s glue

Step 1 Prep Your Letter:

Draw your letter and cut it out. If you aren’t great at making letters use a typing program on your computer (Word, Pages, etc) and make a big letter and print it out then trace onto your cardboard. As you can see it took me a few attempts to get me “S” the way I wanted it. Once you get your letter cut out and if you are using more than 1 color of yarn make sections on your letter. I made horizontal lines to evenly space my yarn colors out.

Cut out your letter in cardboard and mark your sections in this simple yarn craft activity.

Step 2 Start Winding:

With your first choice of yarn color tape it on the back and start winding. I wound it around once and then went back over it a second time to fill in any gaps where I could see the cardboard poking through. Once you are done with that particular color or done wrapping all together I used hot glue to secure the yarn on the back. Regular Elmer’s glue would work too but it just may take longer to dry. I also used glue on the edges of my “S” so that the yarn would slip off the ends of my letter.
