Home Build Journey: Exterior Finishings

Home Build Journey: Exterior Finishings

Oh hey there….let’s just pretend it hasn’t been almost 5 months since my last post about the house, okay? Okay, so in my defense, the house work kind of slowed down when harvest started so I have that as kind of an excuse but otherwise it’s all on me. But here we are and things are moving along rather quickly on the inside so we need to do some catch up. In the last post I talked about the siding going up and that is where things were left.

So let’s bring things up to speed in the best order I remember but not exact because things were happening simultaneously. So do you all remember the derecho? That morning my girls and I were driving to the house from the dentist and I was talking to my husband on the phone about what all was happening. We had roofers, concrete pourers, and someone working on stone all at the house that morning. Freshly poured concrete in the garage and people on our roof before all hell broke loose. I was driving to the house thinking, great, fun driving in a thunderstorm but when highway signs started uprooting out of the ground we took cover.

All was well given the fact we had a straight up hurricane come through. A little dirt in the concrete and some shingle wrappers blown across town but other than that everything seemed to stay in place which was amazing. Here are a few snapshots from that day.

We also had quite a bit of stonework still being done around the entire house including the chimney.

Let’s talk about painting the exterior and how we picked the hottest weekend to do it in the middle of summer. With a lift, sprayer, and hard work we were able to get the exterior “mostly” painted. My husband, father-in-law, and I did all the work and I don’t remember being so damn hot in my life but we got it done and it looks fantastic. Not to mention a grandma doing the real work hanging onto the kids so we could get it knocked out.

We ran out of time after harvest to finish the front of the house so that will be on our list come this spring. Some detailing had to be done first before the porches could be painted….which we will get to.

We had our back porch built and our pillars framed out on the the front porch. And we also had our porch ceilings put in which will be stained at some point but are beautiful in their natural element. We also had our fireplace cap put on!

Obviously there is still plenty of work to do on the outside yet but as the weather got colder we moved to focusing on getting the inside done and ready for drywall! A lot of that was going on throughout the fall hvac, electrical, plumbing, and finally insulation. All of that was going on as well but let’s be honest, those pictures aren’t very dramatic in changes so I will spare you with all that. I feel like we looked at the studs for so long! So I will leave you with the last picture of our drywall being delivered and really feeling like we turned a corner.
