About the Design

So let’s talk about this little pillow design a bit. I have seen these two-tone pillows all over the place and really love the look so I wanted to re-create that with yarn. The pattern work on this pillow was inspired by a vase I saw one day while shopping. I loved the basic pattern on the vase and I tried to recreate it with a bit more detail on this pillow. The use of contrasting yarn really makes the pattern pop at first glance. I chose to do a solid black back to keep the focus of the pillow on the front and not have too many elements competing for attention.

A little backstory, I had done the color work for this piece over a year ago. It then sat in a pile of WIPs to die. I pulled it back out and for some reason it instantly came to me to make a pillow design and the rest was history. I had the pillow done in the next 2 days.

The Yarn

For this project I chose to use Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy yarn. I happened to have all three colors needed on hand and I knew this level 5 yarn would make this project work up rather quick. I haven’t worked much with this yarn before this project but was pleased with the texture and outcome for this particular project.

This yarn comes in sooooooo many colors you could easily change up the colors for this particular project to your liking! So many possibilities to choose from!

The Construction

Knit two squares. Was that simple enough? Okay okay I’ll elaborate a bit. The squares measure 16 in x 16 in and it is SUPER important that while working the pattern that you don’t carry your yarn too tight otherwise the pattern won’t look as crisp in the end when you have to stretch it so much to fit. Once you have your two squares knit you will then block them so that they are easier to seam together.

Once your pieces are ready to seam the process is pretty simple you whipstitch the top and bottom and use the mattress stitch to seam the sides to create that “invisible” seam. Before you seam the last side you will insert your pillow form and encase it in on the last side.
